A sense of wonder in every moment.
A child-like excitement at the ordinary.
Awe in the routine and amazement in the familiar.
Sounds like a fairytale doesn’t it, but it needn’t be. This is what life ought to be like, for each day is a miracle and each moment is a treasure to behold. Unfortunately it is the ‘familiar’ and the ‘routine’ which often robs us of such wonder. We get so caught up in the day to day trials that we forget life is meant to be peaceful and joyous. We strive from the moment we wake to the moment we collapse into bed at the end of the day. Day in and day out, weeks turning to months, our lives passing us by.
All the while there is a part of us that knows there is more to life. We hear a bird chirping or catch a sunrise and our soul leaps and breathes it in. We yearn for it to last just a moment longer for we sense there is greatness around us, a gift for us to share.
What does it take for us to stop and take notice of such moments, for we must stop!
It is in stopping the flow of ‘routine’ that we have the chance to really live. To be ‘awake’ to all the childlike wonders of ladybirds on rose petals and crystal clear streams on a sunny day.
The wonders of a baby’s laughter and the touch of a loved one’s gentle kiss, the smile of your children and the sound of rain upon the roof.
I’m sure many of us live our lives bound by the ordinary because we walk around with our eyes shut. So much of our day and our world pass us by unseen.
We need to awaken, to open our eyes and the eyes of our hearts to really take in what surrounds us. The beauty, the wonder, the threads of nature and the lives of those around us.
That our lives would be a great adventure, whereby each morning we awake excited for what this day holds… and this day… and the next.
To beat the familiar, to overcome the trap of routine we must remember every second is a gift and every person is a blessing.
